About Via Dura
Leadership Development for People Who Do Hard Things
Via Dura Coaching and Consulting was created for people who work, lead, and make decisions in high-pressure environments. They are choosing “the hard way.” Though the hard way is not always better, some meaningful work cannot be made easy. This work can only be met with more clarity, more courage, more skill, and more humanity.
Via Dura helps physicians, healthcare leaders, founders, professionals, teams, and organizations build the capacity to do hard things without losing themselves in the process.
Why Via Dura Coaching and Consulting Exists
“The goal is not to make hard work painless. The goal is to help leaders become more grounded, more capable, and more fully alive while doing the work that matters.”
Hard work changes people. It can sharpen us. It can strengthen us. It can deepen our sense of purpose and bring forth the best of who we are. But hard work can also narrow us. It can make us reactive, disconnected, exhausted, and unaware of the patterns that are shaping how we lead and live.
Via Dura exists because the difference between thriving and enduring is not just learning to tough it out alone. We believe that the challenges we face as leaders are not simply obstacles to get through. They are invitations to grow. These challenges bring the necessary push to help us examine our assumptions, our values, our fears, our habits, our emotional blind spots, and the places where our old ways of operating may no longer serve us. When those patterns become visible, leaders gain more choice. And with more choice, they can lead with greater clarity, courage, steadiness, and humanity.
Meet Ben Zarzaur

“We can change the structure of the way we work by altering the hours we put into a task, by using checklists, and by creating the space we need for work. These are necessary but not sufficient for true happiness. To be truly happy, we have to work on the mindset that with which we approach the hard things that we have to do in our work and in our lives.”
Ben Zarzaur is a coach, surgeon-scientist, leader, and founder of Via Dura Coaching and Consulting. For more than twenty years, Ben has worked in environments where pressure and uncertainty, are part of daily life. Ben has spent his career leading as a trauma and acute care surgeon, a researcher and an educator. As division chief, he builds teams, he cares for people in moments of crisis, works to develop leaders, and helps high-performing professionals navigate demanding work.
Ben’s coaching combines practical leadership tools with deep self-inquiry. His work helps leaders examine the patterns that shape how they communicate and carry responsibility. Some of those patterns are obvious but many are not. These patterns often live beneath the surface, in old assumptions and unexamined habits. They can lead to conflicts of values emotional blind spots, and inherited stories about success and identity.
In surgery, technical skill matters. So does judgment, preparation and communication. Surgeons must remain steady when the stakes are high. Over time, Ben came to see that the hardest parts of leadership were rarely just technical. The deeper challenges were human.
How do you carry responsibility without becoming hardened by it?
How do you lead others when you are under pressure yourself?
How do you stay connected to purpose in a system that constantly asks for more?
How do you keep growing when the habits that made you successful begin to limit the leader you are becoming?
The Via Dura Approach
Via Dura brings together three forms of development.
Practical Mastery
The skills, habits, structures, and systems that help people lead well in demanding environments. This includes communication, decision-making, conflict navigation, time stewardship, team process, operating rhythms, and the daily practices that allow leaders to function with greater clarity and effectiveness.
Reflective Depth
A disciplined process of self-inquiry that helps leaders understand the internal patterns shaping their external behavior. This includes values, identity, assumptions, emotional triggers, blind spots, protective habits, and the stories leaders carry about who they are supposed to be.
Shared Experience
Growth is strengthened in community. Via Dura creates coaching conversations, workshops, retreats, and team experiences where people can speak honestly, build trust, examine their work, and develop a shared language for doing hard things together.
What We Believe
The goal is not to make hard work painless. The goal is to help leaders become more grounded, more capable, and more fully alive while doing work that matters. We are here to help people build the internal and external capacity required for meaningful work, sustained performance, and human development.
